CROMWELL.

(From our own correspondent.)

The late rise in the river has caused a considerable amount of drift to travel, affecting the return of Electric 2.

The cld Hartley got into a rich patch last week as she won 63 ounces in two days. The Cremwell Syndicate’s dredge has been shifted up to the point near tde bridge opposite Cornish Beach. They had the misfortune to have one of their boats stove in last night presumably by a floating log, as the boat was in excellent order yesterday evening. On the Clutha the repairs which are expected to take another three weeks are being vigorously pushed on on board Shine i. As the new first motion shaft for No 2 has arrived and been put in position, dredging was resumed on Saturday afternoon.

There is no change to report in the ground or prospects of the Rising Sun. The lower tumbler bushes continue to give trouble, so the dredge was stopped on Saturday and two new ones put on, and some slight repairs to the ladder effected. The ground the Punt dredge is working continues poor. The Alpine 2 is getting fair returns I hear but being a private company they are not published.

Farewell Social to Mr & Mrs Jas. Little.

As Mr Jas, Little ex Mayor and Mrs Little are leaving Cromwell, the Councillors and citizens tendered them a Farewell Social on Friday evening. There was a large attendance, Mr E. Murrell the Mayor elect was chairman, and Mr Das. Horn, Chairman of Vincent County was also on the platform, Mr Jas. Ritchie, Councillor, presented Mr Little with a beautifully illuminated address and a gold albert chain and sovereign case, and Mr Abel presented Mrs Little with a handsome gold bangle. Both gentlemen alluded to the many benefits the town and residents had recehed at the hands of the recipients who had devoted so much time and energy for the welfare of the town and residents. Mr Jas. Horn also spoke enlogistically of both Mr & Mrs Little, who had been among them for nine years, and the former having filled the Mayoral Chair for three successive years. Mr Little feeling responded on behalf of Mrs Little and himself, stating that he was deeply touched with the kindness of the councillors and the residents of Cromwell, and stated that he would value their gifts and the address they had presented him with greatly, and where ever he and his wife would be, they would never forget Cromwell and its residents (applause). The audience then sang “God Save the King” and “Auld Lang Syne.” The ladies provided amplerefreshments which were handed round. During the evening songs were splendidly rendered by Mrs J. Betts and Miss Maud Thomas and by Messrs Bradley, D. C, Jolly & J. Tizard. Mrs Barron acting as accompanyist in a most artistic manner. The gem of the evening was a duet (violin) by Mr Frank Smith and (Piano) Mrs Barron. “Cavaliero Bristicene” which was vociferously encored. They then rendered “Tosti's Good Bye.” This is the first time Mrs Barron has played to a Cromwell audience and there was a concensus of opinion that this lady is one of the best pianists they have heard. At ten o’clock the hall was cleared for dancing and about 40 couple thoroughly enjoyed themselves till 1 a.m.
