The Dunstan Times "Fiat justitia ruat coelum." MONDAY, MAY 31th 1909. LOCAL & GENERAL.

The matron of the Dunatan Hospital de sires to acknowledge with thanks the receipt of a parcel of books and magazines for the use of the patients from Mrs Burnside of Alexandra.

A Parish Church Social is to be held at Clyde on Wednesday, 9th June. An unusually attractive programme has been arranged. A concert and dance in aid of the Moa Creek Cricket Club is to be held at Neville’s Hall on June 11th.

Mr O’Kane, surgeon dentist, visits Clyde on Friday, June 3rd. Hours, noon till 3 p.m.

The flying machine craze has spread to Alexandra where a couple of enthusiasts are at present engaged in the construction of an aeroplane. Mr H. Burmsister notifies that owing to his projected departure from the district all outstanding accounts must be rendered to him on or before June 15th.

Mr Geo. Clark, an old resident of Clyde, died at Wellington on Tuesday last. We understand that the plans for the Spriugvalc footbridge have been approved by the District Engineer. As soon as a bridge reserve site and road thereto has been granted by the Warden the work will be put in hand. The successful tenderer is Mr R. Robertsen, of Clyde. , At the Ophir Court on Thursday last a local sport was lined £5 (the minimum penalty) for shooting more than six paradise ducks.—Judgment was delivered in the licensing case Police v. McCluskey the defendant being found not guilty. _ Tho full judgment is crowded out of this issue.

The contractor for the race cutting for the new water supply for the Borough of Alcxandra expected to have that portion of the scheme finished about the end of tho week. The race is only about live miles in length, several big bends having been taken out by the judicious use of cuttings. The fall is from 20 to 25 feet to the mile and as the race is in solid country all tho way it is not expected to give much trouble. The little owl once again came under discussion at the Council meeting last week, both Crs Jameson and Laidlaw stating that they had made their appearance at their properties. At the latter place tho first time the bird was observed it was making a meal oil'a small bird, and Cr Laidlaw stated that tho small birds would not settle in the plantations as long as the owl was about. He intended getting one or two more owls as they appeared to be doing good work. In this issue MrD. T. Fleming announces his candidature for the seat for Southern Ward in the Education Board that will be rendered vacant by the retirement of the Hon. Thomas Mackenzie in July. Mr Fleming is the first candidate for Education Board honours that has recognised the country newspapers in his announcement to school committees, and from what we know of him, we are sure we may take this as an earnest of his interest in country afiairs generally, and those of the country schools in particular. We cordially wish him every success.

A certain ©ld dame, who is well known to fame

For preferring a shoe for a cottage, Her children would spank and to by-bye would yank, If they ever complained of their pottage Now this shows she was wise, and its safe to surmise In a household so strict and housewifely, If a child bad a cough it was trotted right off, With Woods’ Peppermint Cure—quick and lively.

A Cromwell correspondent signing himself'‘One of Them" writes: You have a local in this week’s paper of the longevity of the old miners in Central Otago and quote a case of one old stager of 83 driving his old mato of 72 to the Benevolent. I think Cromwell can give you points on this, Wc have five living in the Borough and one a few miles outside, who aro all over 80, and apparently in fair health. The joint ages of the six is about 18(5.

The Alexandra Football Club's seven-a-eide tournament, which was to have been held on the King’s Birthday this week, has been indefinitely postponed owing to the typhoid outbreak. Realising that it will probably be impossible to run the fixture at a later date in the season the Clyde Club offered Alexandra the use of their ground free df charge and promised to give every assistance towards making it a success. A subscription of £7 cash was also offered towards financing the tournament but the Alexandra men decided that as one or two of their players wore in the Hospital and might be in a critical condition at that time that it would he inadvisable to go on with it and the oiler was accordingly declined. Mr Menzies, the newly appointed County Engineer, is expected to take up his duties about the end of the week.
