GRAIN AND PRODUCE REPORT.

Messrs Dalgety and Co. Ltd. report as follows

We held our usual weekly auction sale of grain and produce on Mond% and submitted a good catalogue to a fair attendance of buyers. Prices ruled as under

Oats.—The market is quiet, and if anything a shade easier. A grader Gartons are readily taken at quotatiohs, but other sorts are difficult to place. There is no demand for Australian shipment at present. We quote : —Prime milling 1.; 7d to l/7£d, Good to best feed ls4£d to Is old, Inferior to medium Is 2d to Is 4d. Wheat. There is little business doing in wheat. The millers are well stocked and are not disposed to otter prices asked. As no freights arc offering shippers are not operating and quotations are only nominal. We quote Prime milling 4/1 to 4/2, Medium 3/11 to 4s, Whole Fowl wheat 3/9 to 3/10, Medium 3/4 to 3/7, Inferior 2/6 dto 3s per bushel sacks extra.

Potatoes.—Best sound samples meet with good competition and though there are considerably more ottering, last week’s prices are rather more than maintained. Anything at all blighted is hard to sell. Quotes-Extra good up to £3-15s, Best freshly dug samples £3-7-6 to £3-15-0 medium £2-10-0 to £3-5-0.

Chart'.—The market is over supplied with chaff which can hardly be classed as prime, and this quality is hard to sell at quotations. Any really bright, heavy and well cut meets with ready sale. Wo quote Extra prime £2-12-0, Prime £2-7-6 to £2-10-od, Medium £2 to £2-ss, Inferior and discoloured 35s to 40s.

Straw.—We quote Wheateu 27/6 ;o 30s,Oaten 32/6 to 35s Dunedin, 17th May.

Ffit Sheep.—There was a large yarding of 2527, mostly ewes. Prices for wethers at the beginning of the sale were very firm at last week’s rates, but towards the end showed an improvement of from Is to Is 6d per head. Ewes also showed a slight improuement. Quotationsßest wethers 15/6 to 16/6 ; extra to 18s 9d. medium o good 13s Od to 14/6, light and inferior 12s to 13s ; best ewes Us 6d to 12s fid ; extra to 16s 9d ; medium 8s to 9s ; light and inferior 6/0 to 7/0. Fat Lambs—There were 1936 penned, of whibh the majority were very prime quality. Prices were very firm at last week’s rates. Good freezing lambs brought from 12s 6d to 13s 3d; extra 14s to 14s 6d,

medium 11s Od to 12s Od, stores 6s Od to 10s Od. Fat Cattle. There was a medium yarding of 210 head composed principally of good qu dity steers and heifers. Quotes: Prime bullocks £B-10 to £9-15; extra to £ll 2s ; medium to good £7 Os to £8 ; light £6 5s to £6 15s; best cows and heifers £6 to £6-10; medium to good £4 10s to £5.

Pigs. —Owing to a small yarding prices for small pigs were a shade firmer, while porkers and baconers were also in good demand. Wc quote Suckers 11s to 14s Od ; slips 15s to 19s ; stores 20s to 255; porkers 33s to 46s ; light baconers 46s to 55s ; heavy do 58s to 60s. liabbitskins—We held our fortnightly sale to-day when we olfered a very large catalogue. Bidding was exceptionally keen and prices showsd an advance of from to IJd per lb on all good skins. We I( topped the market yesterday with 20Ad for winter does, and indications point to " good skins going even higher. We can strongly recommend consignments. Quotations - Prime winter does 18d to 20Ad ; winter bucks Ifij'd to 17.} d ; mixed bucks and does 15d to 17d ; incoming winters to 15fd ; best autumns ll;/d to 14}rt ; spring bucks 9d to 13d, spring docs 8d to I2d, summers 7Ad to 9ia, milky docs 5Ad to 6Ad, mixed 6d to Bd, small 5d to 6Ad, hawk torn 4Ad to fid, horsehair 17d to iSJd. Hides. We held our usual fortnightly sale on Thursday, 13th iust, when we submitted a small catalogue of 231. Competition was good and results show that prices were equal to those ruling last sale. Quotations— Prime stout heavy ox hides 7£d to Bd, uood heavy 6sd to 7d, light 5Ad to CD, inferior 2Ad to4d, best heavy cow hides Ojd to fi^i,“medium 5Ad tos|d. light 5d to s}d) inferior 3|d to 4Ad, yearlings to s£d. calfskins s|d to Bgd, horse hides to 9s 9cl each.

Sheepskins. -We held our fortnightly sale to-day when we ottered a good catalogue. The attendance of buyers was larger than usual and bidding was very brisk for all classes of skins, prices bcini.' fully up to late rates. Quotations Best A-bred, to 7id ; medium to good 5d to (Ud ; inferior old to 4-id ; best line x-bred 6(1 to 7d ; medium to good to 5Jd ; inferior 3d to 4d ; best merino 5d to 61d ; medium to good 3id to 41d ; pelts 3d to 3id ; best lambskins 4\d to 6.id ; medium to good 3d to 4d. Straw—Quotations—Oaten 32s 6d to 355; wheaten 30s to 32s 6d per ton (pressed). Tallow & Fat.—Prices arc much the same as at last week’s report, all coming forward being readily disposed of. Oats.—During the past week the demand has not been so keen and prices have lieen somewhat easier. Prime Gartons are still in demand, but Sparrowbills and other sorts, are not enquired for. Quotations Prime milling 1/6 to 1/7, good to best feed L 4£ to l/5i ; inferior to medium 1/3 to 1/4 per bushel (sacks extra). Wheat—Owing to the market having receded somewhat in London and America business has practically ceased locally. There is good demand for best fowl wheat. We quote Prime milling 4s Id to 4s 2d, prime velvet up to 4a 21d, medium 3s lid io 4s, whole fowl wheat 3s 9d to 3s 10d, medium 3s 3d to 3s Bd, inferior 2s dd to 3s 3d per bushel. Chaff.—Theie have been large consignments of late, and prices show a 10s decline on last week’s rates both for old and new chaff. Prime old heayy sheaf is in good demand, and at from £2-7-6 to £2-10 ; medium to good £2-2-6 to £2-5 ; best pew chaff £2 7s 6d to £2 12-6, medium and inferior £ll3s to £2 per ton (bags extra).

Potatoes. Prices for good potatoes have improved slightly during week owing to the large of medium quality and Iq.fe badly affected with blight, and are bard of sale. Fieshly dinj gumple* bring up to £3 5s per tp# i goed £2 12s 6d to £217 6d ; inferior to medium £22 6d to £276 d. (bags in).
