CROMWELL.

(From our own correspondent.)

Heavy rain must have fallen In the back country although we had none here for to day the Kawaran rose 4 feet and at time of writing was still rising. The Clutha was not effected. I expect it will cause the Gorge dredges to stop. Alpine Consols started dredging on Saturday night. Neither the Electrics or Hartley did so well this week as last. There seems to be no payable ground on the latters top boundary as the Cromwell Syndicate’s dredge has tested it and got nothing payable. On the Clutha Shine i has _ a large staff of men effecting repairs and alterations to the elevator. There was a considerable falling off in the return from No 2 as compared with the previous weeks. The Rising Sun had another full dredging week consequently her return topped 50 ounces. It will take fully a month for the dredge to work up into her old cut where the above return was got pretty regularly. The 22nd dividend has just been declared making 23/returned to the fortunate shareholders. The electric light has just been installed on the dredge by Messrs Turnbull & Jones. A lot of time effecting repairs was lost by the Punt dredge last week. Riley’s Revival was not dredging last week.

An aged chinaman was found dead in his hut on Saturday morning, an inquest was held in the afternoon.

The employees on the station' gave an invitation ball on Friday evening and it was pronounced to have been one of the most enjoyable and best conducted functions ever held in the district. Fully 100 couple enjoyed dancing in the Woolshed. A splendid supper was provided, and hrst-chss music was supplied by Messrs Blackie and Partridge. Contingents from all parts of the district as well as Cromwell attended.
