SPRINGVALE FOOTBRIDGE
To the Editor.
Sir, Many years ago, as the old story books have it, the residents of this locality, aided by a subsidy from the County Council, raised funds to erect a footbridge over the Manuherikia River at Springvale. That bridge is still there—a monument to the engineer who erected it; but the river unfortunately is somewhere else. On last year’s estimates a vote of £BOO appeared for the purpose of erecting a new bridge over this river and I notice that tenders for its construction are to be dealt with at the coming Council meeting. I would like to suggest one word of caution in this matter as from present indications, owing to the working of a dredge a mile or so up the stream, the river will have cut another channel for itself before the proposed bridge could be erected. We already have one bridge on, or rather under dry land. We don’t want to have the new one added to the list.
Yours etc. Ratepayer.
