Dunedin, May 24th.

FATAL ACCIDENTS.

A man named Geo. Price, employed by the City Corporation was electrocuted at Mosgiel yesterday whilst attending to his duties as electric linesman. No one saw the accident but from the appearance of the body there is ’ abundant evidence to show that the unfortunate man was electrocuted. He comes from Tapanui. and has a sister residing at Outram.

A fatal boating accident occurred at Lake Waihola yesterday resulting in the death of Geo. Kempton, a resident of Musselburgh, Dunedin. Along with two other youths he went on the Lake in a “Flattie” but the weather coming on rough the boat upset. The young fellows clung to the sides of the boat which turned over two or three times. Kempton was unable to hold on any longer and sank to rise no more. The other two, Wilson and Harris, were rescued by a party from the railway and boarding house and were taken ashore not much the worse of their immersion. Later The body of Kempton has not yet been found.

An old woman named Mary Darow, aged 60, was found dead in her cottage in Albion Place off King Street. She suffered from Asthma which is supposed to have been the cause of death.

EMPIRE DAY.

Yesterday was observed as a close holiday in all except the Government Offices. There was little or no stir during the day, except during the hour in which the cadets marched to the Triangle and the Fallen Soldiers Statue. The weather looked threatening. The Fallen Soldiers Statue and the Queen’s were tastefully decorated with wreaths.

A SCOW WRECKED.

The Scow, Echo, went ashore yesterday on the south side of the Karamea river. The crew are safe.

THE DREADNOUGHT*

Dargaville, May 24.

The School children have opened a penny Dreadnought fund and all of the schools of the Dominion are to be asked to open a similar fund.

THE TUHARA WRECK.

The steamer Tangaroa returned this afternoon from the scene of the wreck of the auxiliary schooner Tuhara at Mahia.

Portion of the machinery was saved, also some of the spars and rigging and a small portion of her cargo of coal and timber. The vessel is a complete wreck.

COMPULSORY MILITARY TRAINING.

Wellington 24.

About 50 persons who are opposed to compulsory military training decided to-night to hold a public meeting in the Town Hall to voice the feelings of citizens who are opposed to the movement.

NEW CLASS ROOMS.

At the Education Board meeting applications by the Clyde and Cromwell School Committees for new class rooms were refused, as the Government had declined to make a grant.
