THE NEW THEATRE HAT

An attempt is being made by the ultra fashionables to introduce a new theatre hat. It is a headdress of jewels, and. is the richest and most exaggerated feature of the Directoire invasion. The effect is said to be charming, and for those who sit behind one at the theatre the new headdresses and toques come as a relief to the wide hats and even to the exaggerated coiffures which have hidden so much of the stage for people in the rear rows. Beginning with just a net of jewels, like a Juliet cap, the new headdress has acquired more pretentious proportions, and now, in the shape of a Bagdad or a mujik cap, is made solidly of jewels, with perhaps one rose or an aigrette at the side. The ornaments which are to be worn for the coming spring are made of beautifully colored imitation stones, some resembling cameos, others carved turquoises, opals, lapis lazuli, or any other of the colored stones. Jet has again come into vogue, and one sees turbans made of nothing but jet beads, with a black spangled aigrette at the side, and vastly becoming, too, to just the right kind of Spanish beauty. A few of the theatre turbans are of soft silk or velvet, with one huge ornament and loops of pearls going around the brim. The ornament itself cannot be too elaborate, and is sometimes made of those enormous pearl-like surfaces which beggar the imagination of the deep-sea pearl fisher. Many of these ornaments have long pendants which fall almost over the eyes, some of pearls, beads, or jet.
