RECOMMENDATIONS RE SOUTHLAND RIVERS.

[From the Evening Star's Correspondent.] WELLINGTON, June 21. The preliminary report by the Royal Commission on Rivers (Messrs Gordon, Hayes, TJ Duncan, M.H.R., and the Commissioner of Crown Lands for the district), dealing with Southland clainis, has been received by the Minister of Mines. It is dated May 30. 1900, and their recommendations are as follow : (1) Waiau River and all its tributaries excepting Hollvburn be proclaimed. (2) Kenny's Creek (Orepuki) not to be proclaimed. : (3)-Ourawera Creek, Colac, and all its tributaries to be proclaimed. |(4j The Waikaka River, from its confluence with the Mataura River to the ford on the main road leading to Waikaka township, at the north, boundary of section 51, block 3, Chatton survey district; also tributaries,. Gordon Gully, and tributaries Shepherd's Creek, from its confluence with the Waikaka River to north-western boundary of section 14, block 1, Chatton survey district, with all its tributaries up to the said boundary; also the Little Waikaka River on the east oranch, with all its tributaries to their sources, to be proclaimed, and £4,072 6s 8d compensation to be paid. : (5). Gold Creek, not to be proclaimed. i (6) Charlton Creek, not to be proclaimed. A storm channel should be constructed by arrangement between the landowners and the miners; :(7) Waimumu Creek not to be proclaimed. The prese/it storm channel should be enlarged ajrood. The railway bridges are not sufliciehtlv larjje to carry oft* the flood water. • (8) 'The Waikaia River and all its tributaries, to be proclaimed, and £1,335 K)s compensation paid. |(9) The Titipua and Hedgehops streams not to, be proclaimed until prospecting has been more extensively carried on. ■(10) Regulations are required in order to make it 'compulsory for the holders of dredging claims to 'leave dredged material so as not to obstruct the flow of the water, and when there is good soil it should be taken off before dredging is commenced, and deposited on the top of the dredged material.
