Cromwell.

(from oub own oobbespondikt.) Bright sunny days, keen frosts, and clear nights, is the order of the weather for the past week. FIRE BRIGADE. I hear that a couple of our townsmen, when in Queemtown the other day, ex» tended an invitation to members of the Queenstown Fire Brigade to visit Cromwell in the event of a brigade being formed here, Well, considering the fact that one of the gentlemen is a bit fall blown and bump* tious, more especially when away from home, nevertheless the idea of forming a hricrade is an excellent on* and mnch */» be commended, although the invitation was a bit presumptuous. That a fir 6 brigade is a necessity institution in any centre, I think all will admit, and I am sure if the initiative were taken in the matter a good brigade could be formed and an invitation sent to Queenstown for a practice er« hibition, GOLD BETtm'NS. It is a very difficult matter to obtain any really definite returns. from our dredges, and the ' Cromwell Argus ' has some very pertinent remarks on this sub- | ject in its last issue. There is not th? 1 slightest doubt but that this district does and has not been given its due credit pub* licly from an authoratative standpoint as far as dredging returns are concerned. Again, there is very little show for any surplus labor, as none but experienced tnen are taken on, and not mnch opportunity has been afforded local people for obtaining this experience. Still, judging from outward appearances, matters seem to have been very satisfactory to those concerned in the various dredges—to what extent 1 am unable to say.
