The Dunstan Times. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 5, 1879.
Beneath the rule of men entirely just th rex is mightier than the sword.
We understand that the nomination of Trustees for Vincent County under the Rabbit Nuisance Act will take place on Tuesday, the 23rd inst., and seeing the dreadful ravages of these pests—that which was grand fattening country now renlered perfectly useless, farmers’ crops destroyed, valuable homesteads obliged to he vacated that had been in occupation for numbers of years, and the very general deterioration of property of all kinds consequent on the nuisance—it is sincerely to he trusted that no factious opposition will he raised to defeat the purposes of the Act, hut rather that every class and every district will go in as one man for the election of good men on the Trust. We are perfectly aware that in those districts where up to the present time the pest is not felt, there will Mo some objection to paying any portion of the expense of relieving a neighbour of .in evil they Ihennelv s know n - thing of. Ihe question however >.s, where will the evil end if-action is not taken to ii'pit, as it were, in the hml before it attains the hold it lias in other par's of the country. Some few of Hie ru.'holders, as •also s nne of the farmers, are most praiseworthily using every iff »rt to protect themselves, but as they say, when their neighbours do notiiing their outlay of capital and labour is all but thrown away. To fairly cope with the evil is to attack >t systematically, and as the only feasible way of doing that is by means of the Act, wc urge upon one and all to unanimously assist in bringing it into operation. The Tapamii Rabbit Trust, we see, has imposed a tax of jth of a penny per acre, and with a similar rate we see no reason why this County could not carry out its object.
