Tho Bak'lutlia correspondent of tlio Daily Times concludes his letterwith tho following I ended my last letter with- an anecdote about a political celebrity, and ' have since hoard a good joke in connection with another of tho genus, which may bear repetition. A District Engineer, who had his quarters in a goldfields town in tho interior (Mark Twain’s name for his continental guides will do for him—Ferguson), had arranged with a member of tho Executive (let me call him tho Secretary for Coalfields) to be introduced to tho head of the Government ilurihg a visit to Dunedin. Seeing the Secretary one morning on tho opposite side of the way in Princes-street, walking with another gentleman, our friend the Engineer crossed over, and, slapping him on the back, thus addressed him, “ Look here, Mac, you promised to introduce me to that d little K to day and the Secretary, bringing his walking companion to tho front, with a remark that he would have'much pleasure, said—“Mr II ,Mr Ferguson ;Mr Ferguson, Mr R.” There is no need to say that, if Mr Ferguses did not look the smallest on tho occasion, ho certainly felt it.” Goldsborongh's Monthly Circular for October, 1876, informs us that the season’s sales commenced on the 18th inst., with a large attendance of buyers from all parts of the world. Tho biddings wore spirited, and keen competition was exhibited for all lots offered The prices realised shew a reduction of l.jd to 2d on greasy ; 2Sd to 3d on fleece ; and 3d to 4d on scouted. The highest prices realised were, unwashed, ll|d; washed, la 7d. Shipments to sail from Victoria, How South Wales, and South Australia to arrive in time for the London February sales, it is computed, will be 133,000 bales of this season’s wool, there having been already 41,169 bales shipped. The sheepskin market is reported as healthy, there being a good demand for full wool skins, prices ranging from 2s to 5s 3d each. The hide maiket was also brisk, a few heavy lots—especially New Zealand wet salted, in good condition—realizing higher prices ; New Zealand heavy weights bringing up to 4ijrl per lb ; wet salted, average weights, 3d to 3Jd ; ox hides, 17s to 30s each ; cow hides, 13s to 22s ; calf skins. 5d to s.jd per lb. Tallow brought higher rates, the pn'Ces ranging from L 25 for inferior, to L 36 for. good. Tho Mount Ida. Chronicle, referring in its last issue to the escort returns, says :—The Mount Ida district promises to be the most permanent mining district in Otago, and in another paragraph gives somewhat of a side wipe at the Lakes and Dun'stan districts; saying : “ Queenstown and Arrowtown have bright futures before them, hut those futures will not involve the necessity of a permanent goldfields warden at Queenstown. Mr Simpson, of Clyde, will take charge of the Wakatip district in addition to performing the duties that now partially employ his time at the Dunstan, until relieved by the return of Mr Warden Stratford.” We do not object to the Mount Ida Chronicle putting as good a face as possible on the very bad state of. its district, but wo must at once register our disapprovol of it being done at the expense of the Dunstan and Lakes districts. Mount Ida has our very best wishes that it may advance to the position of permanent premier goldfield, hut neither our wishes nor the exposing of the supposed weaknesses of other districts by the Mount Ida Chronicle will hasten that consummation, however heartily it maybe desired. With the large sum of money, L6o,OflOtoLSO,oooexpended out of thepublie purse on the Head water race and Sludge Channel, Mount Ida should be able to make its mark, and we think it will be as well for our contemporary to devote its attention to them instead of bothering itself with other districts, which, without them or similar large works, are in as good, if not better position, than its own. Fi.oriline ! For the Truth and. Brk\Tir,—A few drops of the liquid “ FloriHne ” sprinkled on a wet tooth-brush produces a pleasant lather, which thoroughly cleanses the teeth from all parasites or impurities, hardens the gums, prevents tartar, stops decay, gives to the teeth a peculiar pearly-whiteness, and a delightful fragrance to the breath. It removes all unpleasant odour arising from decayed teeth nr tobacco smoke. “The Fragrant Floriline,” being composed in part of Honey and sweet herbs, is delicious to the taste, and the greatest toilet discovery of tho age. Price 2s 6d, of all Chemists and Perfumers. Prepared by Henry C. Gallup, 493 Oxford Street, London.
