> . —o— We have received tkb following (being cbpy of resolutioh passed at a Public Meeting hold on Saturday last at the Nevis) from Mr Gcbrge Stratford, M : uor, and Chairman''of the said Meeting : “ Great dissatisfaction having beeh caused throughout 1 the Nevis district by reason of several rne'etihga lately hold having been termed public, a' largo and well-attended meeting was held on Saturday, the 11th instant,-at the “Library Hall, wbeh'the following resolution, proposed by Mr E. A. Drury, and seconded by Mr A. Williamson, was unanimously carried ; That this meeting, in public assembled, desires to place on record its unqualified contradiction to the paragraph appearing in. the Cromwell Argus of the -7th instant, purporting to bo a repriiit from the Wakatip Mail newspaper, alleging that at a public meetihg it was resolved'tb forward a letter of congratulation to Messrs Pyke and Manders for the able tfiahner they had advocated 'the views of the miners in the General Assembly during the present session, and also tb bring before the noticed those gehtlemen the advisability Of forming a road between Kingston and the Nevis Flat, where coal is to be found (of a first class quality) cropping out of the Surface. Whereas no such public meeting was ever held, nor was ever any such vote passed at any public or other meeting holddn at the Nevis, nor has any public meeting yet been held to review the political conduct of either of the gentlemen mentioned. This meeting desires further to express its regret that the same should have received sudh currency, and 'that the Mail and Argus newspapers should have been the innocent medium to interpret the result of a public meeting (when none such was held) reflecting upon the character of public men, whether favorable or’otherwise.” “Proposed by fer W. Brandon, and seconded by Mr .1. Newton : That copies of the foregoing resolution be forwarded to the Editors of the Argus, Mail, and DuNstan Times, requesting insertion.”
