The failure of the recent attempt to stock the waters of the Wakatip with salmon trout must be viewed by the inhabitants of the northern "oldfields in no other than in the light of a public calamity. The pecuniary loss, though heavy, is nothing in comparison to what is lost in the stocking of our lakes and rivers with fish, and we are quite sure that the disciples of old Isaac Walton, with us, deeply deplore the failure of one of the most laudable enterprises ever undertaken on the goldfields The Corporation of Queenstown deserve our best thanks for the part they took in this merito rious undertaking, for, besides a direct outlay of 30/., they incurred considerable trouble and expense in the construction of a breeding pond, into which, if the precious fish had only been safely conveyed, they would have been placed, and very soon have made their way into the Kawarau and Clutha rivers, as well as Lakes Wanaka and Hawea. That every possible care was taken in the transport of the fish from Dunedin we are fully assured, Messrs Clifford and Nsttlefold spared no pains to insure success, and considering that the majority of the fish were alive at Cronv well, the dfficulty of reaching the Wakatip will ultimately be got over; some improvement in the means of conveyance has no dbubt suggested itself ere this to the practical mind of Mr. Clifford. The present failure will we hope prove no detriment to a second attempt. The stocking of our Lakes and Rivers with the finny tribe is no question of Municipal boundaries, all are alike interested, Alexandra Clyde, and Cromwell are equally concerned with Queenstown. The united efforts of these four Municipalities can easily accomplish this and make available to posterity for ever, one of the choicest gifts of a bountiful Providence.
