It is probable that an expert or small body of experts will be appointed to go carefully into the bill, with the object of advising the Government as to whether the proposed scheme ia feasible, and if so in what direction, if any, the measure should be amended. This- work will be concluded before Parliament again meets, and with the information so fas obtained members *ill be enabled to form a much more accurate opinion than ia-now> possible. MINING SCANDALS. With a view to avoiding a. recurren«e ot some of the mining scandals which have occurred during the past year,, the Government" are haviDg inserted in Sir Joseph Ward's Companies Act, now before the Legislative Council, a clause preventing directors who have nob paid their own calls from enforcing calls from erring shareholders. The Labor Bills Committee of the Legislative Council have concluded taking evidence on the Shops aud Offices Bill, and will commence them Jabors on the bills itself totmorrow.. The chief interest, of'course, centres round the clauses dealing..with the banks, mercantile offices, and warehouses, and so far as it is possible to obtain, any information on.the subject the general feeling of the committee is that those clauses shoald he struck out.
