John Stoddart was sentenced to three months' imprisonment and fined £50 for advertising a Derby sweepstake drawn in Holland. The Ornrnz cases are not bubonic plague. -, One of the Matterhorn victims was Mr Robert Black, a Brighton doctor with a large practice. The lady slipped, dragging down her companions. The rope snapped on the edge of a crag. Mr Black and the lady were killed. The others were injured. The Schley enquiry opens on September 12th. A moderate estimate of the wheat yield in Manitoba and the northwestern provinces of Canada is 50,000,000 bushels. Sydney, July 2G. At the Australian Joint Stock Bank annual meeting the profits for the past six months were shown to be £100,057, after paying interest on deposits and 'stock a surplus of £13,465 remained; £11,000 was applied to special station accounts, and the balance added to the surplus. The report stated that the Bank of ( New South Wales' station properties, owing to disastrous drought, had given no returns during the half-year. A further repayment of deposit stock will be made in January next. Melbourne, July 26. The Senate, on the motion of Mr Keating, Tasmania, appointed a select committee to inquire into the question of improving steamship communication between Tasmania and Australia. It was urged that in her isolated position Tasmania was prevented from realising the full benefits of Federal union without better means of communication. It was suggested to establish a fast line of steamers owned by the Commonwealth and convertable into armored cruisers capable of defending the coast. Perth, July 2C>. The Royal visitors bade farewell to Australia to day, the Ophir and her escorts leaving on their long voyage to South Africa in the afternoon. A large and enthusiastic gathering witnessed the departure.
