I Peculiar Charge of Manslaughter.

Christchurch, Last night. An inquest was held at New Brighton yesterday afternoon on the body of the man fonnd on the beach. The jury returned a Terdict .to the effect that the deceased's name is unknown, and that he was found drowned. As to how it happened there is co evidence to show, but the jury are of opinion that the body showed strong evidence of foul play before drowning. Later. The body found on the New Brighton beach has now beea identified as that of A. L. Whelan, shearer, from Melbourne, who arrived here from Dunedin by the Te Anau on November 24th. He stayed at the Railway Hotel up- toTuesday last, and was not seen again after dinner. The police are still engaged'searching the sandhills and beach for Mt. boots and socks, which were missing. The deceased is supposed to have friends in- InvercargUl. Dunedin, L_3t night. At Cromwell yesterday Jaroes Ledingham, dredgemaster of the Uenfcral Electric Dredge, was charged with the manslaughter of William Barclay Morgan on October 16th. While taking a line out in a boat, Morgan was caught in the bight of the wire rope and dragged overboard and drowned. The Crown Prosecutor contended that the* boat was not properly furnished for the work, and that there was culpable negligence. After hearing the evidence, accused reserved his defence. He was committed for trial, bail being allowed in £200', with two sureties.
