Mr St. John Brodrick, Minister for Foreign Affairs, in the Hoaseof Commons, was cheered on announcing the unity of the Powers with a view to relieving the Legations and establishing the supremacy of the Western world. Great Britain would cooperate with the Viceroys to preserve order ill the Yang tse Valley. Shang hai would be defended whatever might occur. Hence they were sending a third brigade from India. Great Britain would resolutely oppose the partition of China as endangering trade, but there was no reason to believe that the other Powers dissented from this view. Britain felt that the future of the Government must be China for the Chinese.
