LETTER FROM LIEUT. ROSS.

In the course of a letter to his wife, dated Marandellas, May 31st, Lieutenant James Ross* in command of the Hawke s Bay section of the Fourth Contingent, states that nearly all the Hawke’s Bay men have been ill with dysentery, some being very bad, Scott, of Hastings, particularly so, but they were then, at date of writing, all well and out of hospital. While at Bamboo oreek a party of the New Zealanders went out on a hunting expedition, two out of the three deer shot falling to Lieutenant Ross’s rifle. H’also got a splendid tortoise, the shell of which he is going to send to Napier. Lieutenant IRoss speaks well of MajorGeneral Carrington (whom he describes as a sturdy experienced looking officer), and Paymaster Lord Dunraven (of yacht fame).
