STATEMENT IN THE COMMONS.
Assistance for Foreigners to Flee. More Missionaries Killed. Turkish Fanatics' Prayers. • Sir F. Grenfell Appointed British Commander.
(Received July 21, 1 a.m.) London, July 19. In the House of Commons, Mr St. John Brodrick, Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, stated that vessels had been hired to assist the foreigners in fleeing coastward. Gunboats on the Upper Yang-tse were in readiness to proceed to any port.
Mr Warren, British Consul at Hankow, has been empowered to take whatever steps the naval commander on the station considered necessary to bring away the refugees
Several missionaries have been killed and houses plundered at Kiutang. Foreign women and children have been requested to leave the Riverina ports. Mahomeddan fanatics in the Turkish mosques are prophesying and prajing for the defeat of the allies. Russia has warned the Porte against a similar tone being adopted by Turkish newspapers.
Sir Francis Grenfell has been appointed British commander in China. Sydney. July 20. The colony will probably send two companies of infantry to China.
