Sydney, July 20

A meeting of A.M.P. policyholders to take the necessary steps to amend the by-laws to permit of the extension of the business to England was of a lively character. A large number of leading citizens who opposed the proposal were in attendance. Sir Joseph Abbott presided. Mr Ashton, member of Parliament, said that no useful purpose would be arrived at by discussing the question on its merits when it was known that Sir J. Abbott and Mr Littlejohn, directors, had 105,000 proxy votes in their pockets in favor of" the proposal. Mr Want wished the directors to adjourn the present meeting till after the meeting on August 24th, when a plain " Yes" or "No " was to be given, to October 10th. He moved accordingly, the motion being carried by an overwhelming majority, but the chairman announced that a ballot was demanded, and stated that a ballot of personal votes for or against the adjournment would be taken on Monday next and the proxy votes on the following Thursday.

The statement produced an uproar. Mr Want, turning to the, audience, called out, "Before you go, remember how you have been treated here today." He announced that he would call a meeting in the Town Hall in protest.
