At a meeting of the .Advances to Bettlers Board yesterday, presided over by tho Hon. Mr Walker, 84 loans were granted, amounting to £21,670. It has been ascertained that of loans authorised by the Board, representing- £772,4:22, the sum of £517,522 has been applied for by applicants for the purpose of redeeming existing mortgages. Of loans accepted from the Advances to Settlers OfEoo, nine have been paid off, amounting to £1925. MoOormick's selection to represent New Zealand in tbe Intercolonial Sonlls ie praotioally decided upen. He will row in a boat fcolonging io P. Graham, of the Wellington Kowing Club, which has beea plaoed at his disposal for the trip. Bhe ie a new boat built by Morton a few months ago, and snita the Pioton man admirably, and ho declares he could not be battas suited. Passages have been 'oookod xor the party by tha Hauroto leaving here on Saturday next. Sir Bias, the delegate to the Conference, saila by the Mararoa on the 6th May. Great interest ia taken in to-night's meeting, and telegrams are passing freely between the delegates and their clubs.
A lsbsrer named Neil Johnsen, living at 41icetown, Lower Hutt, hanged himself this morning. He had been despondent for uome time. Deoeaaed was aged 48, a widower, and leaves five children. Later. The advances to settlers akeady paid oS ere ten, aggregating £2176, and of £772,422 of advances sanctioned, the applicants have doolined £181,820. The amount actually advanced in cash ia £458,442, New Plymouth, This day. Another vein of oil was struok this morning at 1400 feet in the Petroleum Ooy'sboreatMoturoa. Considerable trouble has been experienced during the last few days in the boring operations, but the present developments are much more hopeful.
