The activity of the local sharemarketa is abnormal; and yet it cannot be considered unwarranted when we look at the volume of business transacted in London in some of the least known of New Zealand G.M. How could a mine prosper with such a name? Tuke another, that great gold - producer " The Defeat." The only gold it produced waa from the pockets of the unlucky share holders, whose hopes were defeated. Another series of mines invite confidence from the public by virtue of being in the same provincial district as their more established brethren. Names are chosen suggestive of coming greatness, such as the "Waihi - North-by-East - Extended No. 18." There is a good deal in a name, and some names find favour with the public. Vanity Fair caught ou at once, as being the best cieare'.te in New Zealand, in the cultivated tastes of all the most experienced smokers.
