PROFESSOR DAVIS.

Professor Davis opens a short season here in the Theatre itoyal on Tuesday evening next, 10th inst. He is about the cleverest man in bis lino to bs found in the southern hemisphere. By oonfeßstd trickery Professor Davi* does all the tricks, and complies with all the testa by whioh spiritualists endeavor to convince us of supernatural pow»r and agenoy. The whole of the Australian Press is uua'.itnous in approval of tha professor's marvellous entertainment. The Melbourne ArftisMjß: —The Bijou Theatre was packed kbt evening, and many had to be turned away from the door?. A committee, consisting of Profeseor lanrie, Mr H. V Winter, Dr. Peter Lynch, Dr. Felix Meyer, Dr. L. L. Smith, Dr. Spark, Mr Davysson Symons, Mr Steele Robertson, Mr Phil. Ureeuwood, Mr Annear, and MrOttermeyer was appointed to searoh the professor and his cabinet, and to look after matters generally. At the outset the committee reared with the professor, and on their return Dr. Kpark said they had carefully examined the profesßor, and the members were all satisfied that he had nothing on him beside his ordinary clothing. The cabinet into whioh the professor retires has four uprights with cross-bars, and it Is enclosed by thin black cloths. The professor next produoed a tambourine and bells, irstrumentp, he Baid, whioh were chiefly affected b;, spirits. The committee then inspeoted a black saok which was used to encase the professor. ■Alderman Whelan bound the hands of the professor "so tightly,' said tho latter, " that it stopped the circulation of the blood." His hands were bound behind his back, and when Alderman Whelan put forth hig strength in tying the knot the audienoe applauded. Next Professor Davis was placed in tho black bag, which was securely fastened round his neck, and the knot,li_e that on his hands, sealed. Entering ttie cabinet he was pecuroly bound to a chair. All this was rJone iv full view of the audience, and the lookers-on could see that all was above-board. Tho lights were lowered, and in an incredibly shore space of time the bells oould be heard, and the next sseono the tambourine was bemg played within the oabinet. Then the voice of tho professor was heard exclaiming "I ccc the form of ' Cis*ie ' approaching." In a brief space of time " Ciscie " walked out on to tha stage arrayed ia white, and asked for her favorite confectionery amid roars of laughter. "Gaordie " and ''Josephine " also made their appearance after a due displ-y of phosphorus, and the a idienoe cheered enthusiastically. Then the lights were turned up aud the com • mittee entered tho cabinet and found the professor bound to tha chair with the seals and knots all intact. Without douDt it is a clever perfor ma.nc-3, and the audienoe were left in a state of wonderment aa to how tho professor did it.
