A SUBSIDY FAVORED.
The London Times of May 24th, in a leader on the Paoifio mail subsidy eoheme, says that if there is one feature by which the history of the twentieth century is likely to be distinguished beyond all oth.r. it bids fair to be the development of the opon shores of the Paoifio by a movement of civilisation of the world like that already seen on tha shores of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. The article • considers that the Government is justified in bestowing an annual subsidy of £100,000 on the Paoifio mail and oable service. It suggests that the amount now absorbed by Seohuanaland might be liberated by giving Beohuanaland to Cape Colony, and under a protectorate to a chartered company.
Lord Rosebery and the Marquis of Ripon reoeived a deputation from thu Associated Chambers of Commerce on May 24th. Sir Andrew Eaye Rollit, president of the Chambers, explained the obje.t of the visit, and .aid that it was most desirable that tha Government grant adequate help and encouragement to the proposed steamship and oable lines via Canada to Australia. He concluded with urging that Great Britain should contribute her share (£75,000 yearly) to these schemes. Lord Rosebery did not reply, but informed the deputation that tha Government is eonfeidering the matter.
