MOXDAY, JUNE 10

Present—Messrs W. Shrimpton (chair, man), B. D. i>. M'Loan, G. JSymer, J. ;..J Williams, O. Villers, J. Bennett, and J. B Chambers.

Mr Rymer presented a petition from thirty-six ratepayers residing in the Papaknra district, praying the Council to erect a bridge across tho Black Creek, whhh would give them access to their properties in flood tirao. They pointod out that last yoar they were repeatedly cut off from communication with Napier. 'I he Chairman sa : d that a similar petition was laid before tho last meeting of the Council, but it was thou thought the bridge as asked for was not required Mr Bennett moved that the matter be deferred till next meeting. In the interim he promised to visit the locality, and make enquiries us to the necessity for tho bridge. This was agreed to COBBESPONDENCE

Correspondence wrs dealt with as follows: Tho Meanee Kiver Board wrote asking for the approaches to the river bank at Powdrell's orossing to be made by the Council, whioh was agreed to. —The Board also applied for £100, as the Council's quota towards the oost of protecting the county roads from flood. Aftar some discussion, it was resolved to ask the Meanee and Papakura River Boards to submit a plan showing properly defined river bank lines and works contemplated; if approved of !}ho question of a subsidy would be considered. —An application from the Taradale Sohool Committee for the Taipo Creek to be oleaned out was referred to the Taradale Town Board.—A resolution from some Taranaki ratepayers, askiag for _ the Council's 00-operation iv securing readjustment of the valuation roll, was received.— The Olive River Board wrote asking for a grant of £250 towards liver protection work. In this connection Mr Orr, Hoad Overseer, reported that all that was required to protect the rjad was about 15 chains of willow fasciuns, at a cost of about £40. It was decided to reply that the Oounoit would take the necessary steps to protect the road. —Mr Lanauza, acting for the Rhodes estate, wrote declining to contribute towards the expense of surveying the HmithfieldPuketitiri road. On the motion of Mr Bennett, it was decidsd to prooeed with the road.

Mr Tracy, Road Overseer, reported that metalling repairs in different parts of the county had been carried out as far as poßaible. He reoommended that two open oro?sings on the Mangawhare-Glenross road be onlverted, also that a bridge culvert bo constructed on the Tuuanui road, at a cost of £10. He had examined the Mangatutu road, complained of by Mr Shields, and found it in good order. Repairs on the new Taupo road were progressing slowly, owing to the sodden state of the roads.— Adopted.

Mr Traoy reported that in accordance with instructions he had examined thefenoe encroaohments on the Petane roads. He stated :—:—" Starting from Petane bridge, the fence on western side of road up to Petane Hotel is actually on the road reserve, and that along the line Petane HotelWairoa road in soma oases the feuoe lines enoroach there. Along Taupo road from the hotel the fences encroach on north and south sides of road in nnny places. lam of opinion that no public inconvenience exists from fhese encroachments, excepting on sections 1 to 9 north side of road line. Petane Hotol-Taupo road.—A drain is required along the road line fronting these sections, and to cut and maintain said drain fences require to be removed. A notice was given owners of sections 7, 8, and 9, to remove fences from road; this has only been partially complied with." —Adopted. Mr Orr, sub-overseer, reported that metalling repairs in his district were being attended to as authorised. Two new stringers had been fixed in the Waitangi bridge. Unles' any further scour took place, the bridgo would be sa?e for ordinary traffic. He had examined the proposed line of road, Pukahu to George's road, and found that althoiigh it was desirable to obtain a right of road in that direction the present traffic hardly warranted any great expenditure upon it. He reoommended the construction of a drain through Mr Collisan's property, with a box culvert at the outlet; cost, £25. Tha willows on the banks of the Ngaruroro river between the bridges at Pakowhai required removing. The Kereru road (26 chains) required metalling, also at Blaokhill on the Bame road.— Adopted. MISCELLANEOUS.

An application from the Taradale Biver Board, that the river bank at Taradale be prooeeded with, was, on the motion of Mr Rymer, deferred for a month. The report of tho Inspeotor of Slaughterhouses stated that all the houses in the district were in good order. Mr Chambers gave notice to move that the Council acquire about three aores of land between Pukahu and Hastings for the purposes of a road,'and a committee, consisting of Messrs Williams and Chambers, was appointed to define the right-of-way. The Ohairman gave notioe to move that By-law No. 7be repealed. He pointed out that, at present the traction engines bylaws allowed six tons, wheress By-law Mo. 7 only psimitted five tons to ba carried in one load over the county roads. With respect to an application from the Papakura biver Board, asking that tho reserve situated between Grant's*embankment and the Tutaekuri river bo vested in the Papakura Biver Board, it was decided not to accede to the request, but if the Board at any time required material from the reserve permission would be given to take it.

Mr Chambers gave notice to move at the next meeting that the owntrs of property on both banks of the Ngaruroro river below the Pukahu Biver Board district be served with notice to ring-bark the willows on the banks of the river, with a view to the bed being cleared at some future date. Acoounts totalling £822 4s were passed for payment, and the Council adjourned.
