LICENSING MATTERS IN CHRISTCHURCH.

THE BAR QUESTION,

[FEB FEBSS ASSOCIATION.]

Ohbistohubcii, Last night. The annual meeting of the Licensing Committee for Christohurch district waa held to-day. Applications for renewal of licenses in respect of several hotels against which informations for Sunday trading hod been laid by the Prohibitionists", were' adjourned till after these charges had been heard in tho Magistrate's Court here. Ihe houses were Burkes, the Prince of Wales, Eastern, Tattecsall, Caversham, New Zealander, .Royal, White Swan, and the Zetland Arms hotels.

Upon the application of T. Popham for renewal of a license to Ooker's Hotel being called a petition, signed among others by Bishop Julius, the Beys. F. Knowies, ■•*. Morley, J. Ernslio, H. B. Pewberr?, A. J. Ayerill, J. Dawson, A. Mitohell F. W. Mtt, J. Hosking and Orohard; Brigadier Honking and two captains and a lieutenant of the Salvation Array, was read. It made certain allogations with regard to the oon•duot of one of the bars. The application was postponed till June 24th, when it waa agreed that evidence in regard to the petition should be heard. With the exception of two cases whioh were postponed for effecting improvements in premises, all the other applications for renewals were granted. A letter was read from the Prohibition League, stating that there were few if any houses in the district whioh did not possess one or more bars, whereas the Aot contemplated licensing one only. The chairman said the Committee had nothing to do with the question. The Committee i-sued a license for one bar to eaoh house', and if there were more within the meaning of the Act it was for the police to take action. Inspector Broham said the matter was one that had been greatly discussed. He had himself wnen in Auckland taken the intiative and laid infcrmaticn under the Aot, but they were dismissed, and the same thing had been the case in other localities. He was of opinion, after oarefully looking into the matter that there were no breaches of this seotion of tbe Act in Christohurch. If any person thought there was a breach of the Aot it was quite open for him to lay an information.
