The District School Committee met last - night at Maddiaon and Oo.'a offioe. There was a full attendance—Captain Bussell (chairman), Messrs Middison, George, k'Quillan, Cook, Tong, Fritchley, Morgan, and Goldamitli. The report of the headmaster was the prinoipal business One of the fireplaces was dangerona; Yiaitmg Committee to deal with it. Tha Bum of £5 12s had been received for stationery for the quarter. The normal attendance of the Bchool had been lower thin usual, owing to sickness and bad weather. Tho number of pupils on the books is 570. By the former regulations the school would have been entitled to a second assistant master, and Mr tmith strongly urged that this was necessary, and asked the Committee to recommend the Board to grant a second assistant master. He pointed out that Hastings was the only school likely to require this concession for many years. Several schools in both Wands were named in comparison with whioh tho Hastings school was understaffed, 'ihe Committee perfeotly agreed with the headmaster, and it was resolved to write to tha Education Board, urging the appointment of a seoond assistant master.-A letter was received from the Board, reoommending June 25th as the date for the commencement of the holidays, unless the Committee desired any alteration!! In reference to this, Mr J. A. Smith wrote, recommending that the holidays should be deferred until after the examinations, which would not tike plaoe until after the end of July; approved, the Board to be requested to make the alteration.—Mr Maddisou that the grating in the quadrangle bo lowered; approved.—A letter oontaming instructions from the Board to local tenderers for school furniture was read.— A list of habitual truants was read, which is to be sent to Constable O'Connor, who is to send iv a monthly report to tha Committee.—lhe Visiting Committee spoke highly of the manner in whioh the caretaker kept the Bobool.—Leave of absence was granted to CapUin Russell, At H.R., for the Parliamentary session.—Accounts amounting to £0 2s 4d were passed.-Messrs Maddiaon aud McQuillan wore appointed visitors for ensuing month. Yesterday I waa favored with a view of the plan for tho new shops for Mr Hughes. The new premisss are something like tho line of shops erected by Mr Foreman after the big fire. Thero are three double window shops, and a largo cover shop evidently intended as a butcher's establishment.
