" The Chinese Gambling Emquiry Commission in Sydney," tho Morning Herald states, " have so far been almost exclusively engaged in examining witnesses, and most - of the evidence elicited haa had reference to ' the charges of corruption against the members of tbe police, indeed, it ia the intention of the commission to conclude this portion of the enquiry before proceeding to deal with the more general circumstances of Chinese life in the city and suburbs. It is probable that tho police question will form the Bubjfct of a progress report to be shortly to tho Governor. At a recent meosfiug it waß decided to call the attention of the Inspector General to the fact that public notices in tho Chinese language announcing that gambling is carried on day and night are affixed to a largo number of ' houses in Lower George strent, Campbell street, and Goulburn street, At the sumo time the commission expresses the opinion that the exposnre of these notices affords ample evidence that tho law is cominually broken, aud ought to have led to prosecutions."
