LATEST AUSTRALIAN NOTES.

TIPS FOR THE DERBY AND CUP

[pee PBESS association—copybight.]

(Received October 30, 1 p.m.)

Melbouene, This day.

The following tips are given by Melbourne sporting writers on the V.R.C. meeting, which opens at Flemington tomorrow :—" Augur," in the Australasian, for the V.R.C Derby favors Strathmore, Oxide, and Stromboli in that order, and for the Melbourne Cup selects either Strathmore or Carrington to win, with Correze or Malvolio.to.fiU the places. " Ribbleden," in the same paper, " selects as follows : —Derby, Strathmore, Oxide, and Stromboli; Cup, I Strathmore or Paris to win, with Muriel ' and Malvolio next. " Asmodeus," in the Leader, places them thus : —Derby, Strathmore, Penance, and Oxide; Cup, Sir William, Paris, Correze. •• Caspian," in the Weekly Times, looks to Strathmore to win the Derby, with Stromboli and Oxide in that order, and for the Cup selects Malvolio, Strathmore, and G'Naroo. "Free Lance," in the Sportsman, picks as follows:—Derby, Strathmore, Swordbearer, and Stromboli; Cup, Whimbrel, Paris, Malvolio. " Sterling," in the same paper, tabes Penance, Strathmore, and Oxide to finish in tbat order for the Derby, and Malvolio, Pigeontoe, and Highborn for the Cup. " Nunquam Domio," in Punch, fancies Oxide, Stromboli, and Penance for the Derby, and for the Cup thinks that either Oxide, Whimbrel, or Malvolio will win, with preference for the former, while Muriel and King Olaf he takes as the best of the outsiders.

A heavy thunderstorm was experienced after the intense heat yesterday, and there was a copious rain fall during the night. The weather is still threatening.

Forest King, who was struck out of the Cup last night, splintered his near foreleg and over-reaching himself during a good gallop. Pigeontoe is easier for the Cup, and along with Paris, Malvolio, and Correze, is quoted at 100 to 10. Despite the fact of eight days' enforced idleness, Greygown has been backed down to 100 to 5, at which price G'Naroo has been well supported. The friends of Sir William and King Olaf have rallied round them spiritedly at

100 to 4, whilst Oxide and Carrington are in good demand at 100 to 3, and Tantallon is at 100 to 2.

Power will ride Annesley in the Cup,
