We learn that the timber merchants erf the Hawke's Bay district have decided to increase the price of timber. Our Auckland correspondent wired this afternoon:-" Red Mercury obtained 140 ounces of gold from 80 tons grinding. Ihe pan is not cleaned up yet." A special meeting of the Napier Harbor Board will be held to-morrow afternoon, to consider amongst other business the proposal to order from England a nteam dredge required for the works. The hospital returns for the month are : —In hospital at last date, 9 males, 3 females; admitted during month, 14 males, 4 females ; discharged, 14 males, 2 females j dead, 1; remaining at date, 8 males, o females. The Napier Holiday Association has declared fall holidays for Monday next, "October sth, H.B.J.C. race meeting; Friday, .October 9th, A. and P. Society s Show ' and Tuesday, October 13th, Napier _Park Racing Club's spring meeting. Our Danevirke. correspondent writes:— <« Inspector Pardy is here enquiring into the circumstances attending the arrest of the Unfortunate man Ross. On Saturday a young Maori drove up to the Kate of the Napier hospital, and solicited to see the superintendent. _ On Dr. Menzies «Hnndin(? the native pointed to an aged SSSfIE, was lying afthe bottom of the vehicle The doctor was informed that tho lick man had swallowed the eye bone of an «el, and that for three weeks, he had been Buffering acute pain. He/ asked if the doctor could afford him any relief The Maori was attended Dr. Menkes, who performed a very difficult operation, >' and succeeded in extracting the bone. As aoon as the operation was concluded, the native felt better, and he drove away much vhappier than when he entered the hospital. Our Waipawa correspondent wires aB follows •— •' The man Ross, who waß recently admitted into the Waipawa District TWtal suffering from injuries to his S Sough the wheel of his, cart passing over him, is in a dying condition His d-poaSs were taken yesterday, before Mr WO.
