Hastings.
(OWN OOEBESFOKDmn.)
I have been shown a letter from the Minister of Justioe stating that the question of the Hastings Courthouse is under the consideration of the Government. This is in answer to a memorial containing two hundred signatures, and was prepared and forwarded by Mr A. B. Greene. Mr Beilby, secretary of the A. and P. Society, informs me that there is a large increase in sheep entries this year. The other classes are about the average.
The School Committee will meet on Friday evening, at the usual office in Beecroft's repository. The Wesleyans will meet this evening at what Sam Weller called an agreable "swarry." Instead of the leg of mutton which graced the board in his case, coffee, sandwiches, and other light refreshments will be handed round. Musical selections of various kinds will add to the pleasure of the social gathering, which is intended to be held quarterly. - The American Minstrels intend paying Hastings a visit shortly. On dtt that a musical comedy, the production of a well-known Hastings resident, is in active preparation, and will shortly be staged by our best amateurs. •The Musical Society are in active rehearsal for their next concert. The Sboiety has acquired a valuable addition in the shape of a double bass, an old acquaintance of Napier musicos. The next local event of importance is the Mayoralty election. The nominations are due on November 4th, and the polling (if any) will be held on Wednesday, November 18th. There appears to. be a wide belief that the present Mayor will be returned unopposed, although a well-known resident is spoken of as a probable contestant. Next week will be a gala week, but there are few signs of it yet, except that ono or two trotters have been showing their paceß.
