Hastings.
(own correspondent.)
The natives at Waipatu are making great preparations for the races there, which were so great a success last year. The site used there has been sold in aectious. so another is being proposed ; it is on the Havelock side of the Hastings road, ready opposite the eroi-siug. Tho judure of the meeting, Mr Ihaia Hutana, tells me that the new course has been ploughed, harrowed, and put in grass, aad will bo in first-rate condition when required.
The f<t. Matthew's Gymnasium ball tonight will be held in their own hall.
The Volunteer weokly dance at the Town Hall took place last night, the hall having been engaged on Tuesday for the banquet. Virtue has to be its own reward sometimep. The official carvers at the banquet appreciated this, for they had to go without their dinner. When it came to their turn they had no difficulty in finding meat, but no accompanying bread or vegetable, except the transformed potatoos. As sponge cake don't go well with sucking pig or baron of beef, they had to take out their recreation in speeches. They have registered a resolve to take a back seat next time.
Mr J. L. Stuart, of the Albert Hotel, contributed to tbe late banquet a haggis of bis own making. There was a full orchestral musical service at St. Matthew's Church on Monday, in honor of the patron of the Church. Although I have not been able to see the amount upon the Estimates that have appeared, thote is little or no doubt that tho Courthouso will soon be erected, for I have seen ■-<■ telegram from Captain Russell, our M. li.ll , in which he states that Mr Seddon some dfiya promised to him to place tiio amount upi'ii tho Estimates. Without euteiing to the quei-tion as to whom this result is due, there is no doubt that the borough is largely indebted to Mr A. B. Groeuo iVr the energetic steps ho has taken in tho mutter. All tbe letters ar.d memorials that huvo from time u> time been gem to the Government have been prepared by hi-n, also the signatures obtained thereto. Th« new Courthouse will Iβ a great improvement to the town.
