A brief biography of tho famous operatic contralto, Modame Trebelli, from the pen of her friend, Mdlle. do Mensiaux, has just been issued. The sketch, apart from the extravagant eulogy which, apparently is inseparable from such things, is (says Truth) both readable and interesting, it including, besides a tolerably full account of the artist's life, several anecdotes and narratives of curious events which have happened to her in the courso of her career. Thrice it seems Madame Trebelli has played tenor parts — that is to say, onco in 1870 in London, when the titular character in Weber's Abu Hassan -was altered by Sir Arthur Sullivan to suit her voico; once in 1872 at Newcastle, when, as Tamino, in the Magic Fluto she replaced her husband who was ill; and previously in 1801, at the outset of her career, when at Riga, sho played Almaviva iv II Barbiere, the Itosina then being instructed to ask tho pretended Don Alfonso for a song iv order that the prima donna might sing a solo iv tho lesson scene. All sorts of quaint anecdotes are included in this amusing sketch, from that which tells us how in the intervals of an operatic performance in honor of the Shah of Persia Madame Trebelli appeared at a privato party in tho dress of Federico (in " Migiion,") and was told by the servants that pago boys should pit in the hall; to her early attempts at speaking Russian, when

her endeavors to induce a native waiter to bring her an egg, resulted first in the offer of a huge dish of fried onions, and finally in tho arrival of a doctor, who had been called in by the waiter under the improssion that the artist was sufforiug from a cold in tho throat.
