GETTING SERIOUS AT CHRISTCHURCH.
CLERKS LOADING THE COLAC.
GENERAL RATLWAY STRIKE IMMINENT.
Christchurch, This day. About 800 men altogether are on strike in Lyttelton. The platelayers wero called out this morning.
Forty men wore sent pown by the 12.10 p.m. train to take their places, but witne out directly they were called. No sailing ships are being worked. Tho clerks from the Union Offico, Christchurch, are loading the Colac. At 10.40 a.m. the cooks, stewards, bakers, and butchers, on tho Union Company's steamers came out to a man.
Messrs Nelson, Moate aad Co. havo given their hands notioo that they may havo to dispense with their services. The manager of tho railways asked the clerks to stand by tho Commissioners, but they have declined. A general strike of railway hands is on the cards.
At Rangiora, at a meeting of farmers, it was stated that all volunteers would get Is 3d an hour for eight hours and 2s (id an hour overtime.
