London, August 18. In his monthly circular, Mr F. O. Licht estimates the production of beet sugar for the last eleven months will show an iucrease of 828,000 tons. Ho expects that tho "campaign" will show a surplus of 554,000 tons. In the speeoh from the Throne at the prorogation of Parliament, Her Majesty stated that she had gladly given her consent to tho bill providing for responsible Government in Western Australia, as similar institutions had worked with marked success elsewhere in Australia. Out of a total of ISOO cases of cholera in Spain, 1000 proved fatal. A despatch from Guatemala announces that the States of Guatemala and Honduras are demanding that General Czeta shall resign tho presidency of San Salvador. General Carlos Czeta was the leader of the forces in San Salvador, but on the sudden death of General Mennedez, the President, which took place at a banquet held towards the end of June, he assumed command.
During tho disturbances arising out of the strikes on the New York Central Railway, the police stationed at Albany fired on tho mob, wounding three persons. This action enraged the crowd, and some of the police narrowly escaped being lynched.
There is enormous speculation in silver going on in America, and 2,000,000 ounces have been sold at price? rising as high as 125 cents. Sydney, August 19. The wharves present a deserted appearance. Tho wharf laborers came out in a body at 2 o'clock this afternoon, and the seamen are coming out as their notices expire. The master stevedores are advertising for labor to load and discharge vessels. All vessels in port except tho boats trading to New Zealand havo been laid up. The Jubilee, ami Tels:ip-> sailed for New Zealand this evening. The coal lumpers have decidod to strike to-night. Meldouene, August. 19. Tho maritime bodies have resolved to come out on strike to-morrow. Brishaxe, August 15. Tho niiiniigerh-, clerks, and other officials ara engaged discharging cargo on the wharves.
