N.Z. LOAN AND MERCANTILE AGENCY COMPANY.

New Zealand Hemp.—Manila continued to recede during the earlier part of the past month, a decline of 30a per ton being recorded at the end of the first fortnight. A firmer tone, however, has supervened, (B\d values at the close are about on a pat with opening rates, fair current being now quoted at £34 per ton o.i.f. Sisal continues to be neglected, £25 per ton being asked for fully fair, ox quay, Liverpool. New Zealand has met a dull enquiry throughout the period under review, and it has generally been uecessiry to accept a further decline of from 10s to 20s per ton in urdor to effect bales. At the most recent amnions ht-ld on 9th instant, however, values tor good to fine descriptions marked some improvement, but common sorts again ruled easier. The total visible supply is still large, while stocks here continue to accumulate, the quantity in warehouse at: the end of June, showing an increase of 1 529 tons as compared with that of 31st About 5,000 bales have been offered at public auction, of which some 3,200 bales onnd purchasers at and after the sales at the following rates. Very ordinary and. str-iwv £13 10s at £15 per ton ; ordinary,, browm'sb. in color and strawy £18 10s to £17 10s per ton; fair medium, rather strwy £18 to £18 10a per ton, and medium to fine, £19 to £21 15s per ton. Frozen Meate.-Not withstanding the anfavorable weather as a rule experienced during the past four weeks, the market has continued fairly steady for home-fed matton Small sheep of good quality have met a oood demand throughout, and whileother descriptions have proved less ready of sale, as the quantity marked has at no time beon excessive, prices have on the whole been well maintained. Supplies of Continental sheep have been of an unimportant character as is usual at this period of the year. , During tho earlier part 'A the period under review available supplies of New Zealand mutton were reduced to moderate compass, but iecent arrivals have been, heavy, and stocks are now in larger volume than for some time past. Should these fee unduly pressed for sale, it is probable tfcat: present quotations will not be supported.. Sales, however, have been effected steadily, and values have well maintained theirposition throughout the month, the market closing at our quotations # In consequence of the plentitude and verylow prices of American beef, frozen descriptions have met a dragging sale, and! prices have further receded, but during the last few days, with shorter supplies of tho former, some improvement has been manifested in New Zealand hindquarters. Forequarters, however, still prove difficult of sale. , , , Trade in the provinces has been on the whole satisfactory, prices throughout being about on a par with those ruling in London. The subjoined table gives the importations of frozen sheep and lambs into London during the first six montns of tb.e current year, as compared with those for corresponding periods in 1887, 1888, and 1889, viz. :— IBS 7.
