Gilbert and Sullivan's new opera " The Gondolier" is a pronounced success. [Something touchinir tho new Gilbert-Sul-livan comic opera may prove interesting. Like its predecessor it has two acts. The scone of the first is laid iv Venice, while the second is located in " Barataria," an imaginary island in the Mediterranean. Tho period chosen is between 1750 and 1760. The story concerns a revolutionary Doge of Venice, who, when wandering disguished amongst his poople, gets mixed up with a secret society, and, as a result, is desiged in his assumed character, to assassinate his real personality. The music is very Ught, and is mainly of the French school, though he reverts to tho Italian method in tbe second act. One conspicuous feature of tho opera will be the preponderance of tho concerted music over the solo numbers, Gilbert having determined to let his puppets sing and dance simultaneously as much as possible. A most characteristic gondolier's ditty folbws tho opening chorus in the score. The view of the Grand Canal and the Cathedral of St. Mark will be one of tbe finest scenic effects ever attempted at tho Savoy. The chief characters are two contadiuas and two gondoliers. There will be no Grosatnith part, and tbe cast includes Geraldina Ulmar, Jessie Bond, Miss Brandram, Rutland Barrington (who returns to tbe scene of bis former triumphs), Frank Wyatt (a new recruit), Pounds, and Denny]

[ NO VIOLENCE. The strikers repudiate the idea that it was intended to resort to violence. FEDERATION. Lord Carnarvon, in his speeoh, said that Colonial Federation must be the forerunner of Imperial Federation. Sir Dillon Bell argued that it was a condition precedent to the naval compact that the colonies would not secede from England. He was doubtful whether tho colonies would federate. Sir Androw Clarke emphasised the Monroe doctrine, and advocated an Australian Military College. FALL IN WOOL AT ANTWERP. At the Antwerp wool sales prices have fallen since the opening twenty centimes per kilo. FATAL FALSE ALARM. A falsa alarm of fire at Johnstown, Pennsylvania caused the death of twelve persons, and scores of others wero seriously injured in tho crush. WILL PROBABLY RECOVER.
