Eparaima Riding.—As instructed, I hay called for tenders for metalling at-Wan-stead, WaUingford, and Porangahau Hill,' to close on Ist November. All three con-" tracts were let to Mr. A. Peebles, of Woodville, who subsequently forfeited them in consequence of a mistake on the part of. the post office in delivering the documents connected with the contracts.. This erro results in a loss to the s "Council of over £100, and to the contractor employment for over three months, to the value of - £500.—. Tho WaUingford and Porangahau Hi_ r contracts have been let jo the next tenderer

i at an advance of .Is _per yard.—Peebles t declines to take up the Wanstead metalling^, i contract, for which he was ;,the bnly; 9 tenderer, so that fresh tenders halve been! 7 call—l for,- and... -will bo ___ b.__re."-yx>_ "at.. t this moeting. Peebles has'applied for a re- <■ fund of his deposit, as he has forfeited the \ contracts through no fault of his own. The i formation of McMullien's Pinch, " and - fencing the new road, have both been com-. r pleted, and tenders" will shortly be invited • for metalling ten chains of block'cutting ' hi' Cannon's lane and for " fdrmiing twelty* ■ chains on the flat below.-..-•'"«"!-■ iv; kl'V-Vi'-y~s Porangahau. Riding.~-__e contractor fyt* ' metalling at Blow Hard on the Porangahau hill has made an energeti a commencement, of his work, but I find that the character of % the stone in tbe quarry deteriorates; as thef excavation of the face proceeds. The metal * will not form quite so durable, a roadcoating as I had anticipated." 4 - TenderSjfor, delivery of metal in the worst portions of the side cutting in Crosses hill will be palled for this month, to follow on" the Contract for ( metalling now'in Herbarlyil}fl_ The contractor for this latter work has been* delayed in starting. The Porangahau Road Board have consented to the exchange of the Waikopiro Valley for the Coast, Rangeroad, in the Porangahau block, antl ß will grant a payment of _50 towards meeting the expense of repairing a bridge near Mr Graham Speedy's; of -forming 1 a de-vi-ion at the Wimbledon Hotel. If the terms submitted are agreeable to the Coun-s oil, it may be desirable to stipulate.'that tf_) roadman's sledge-hut in Dootor'fl G__y shall remain the property of the Counoil. The creek at Sharp's crossing requires bridging, and about twenty ohains of steep Bide cutting to rise the hill, which could. be. put in band at the same time as tbe abovementioned works if the road be exchanged as proposed. Steps should be > promptly taken for arranging for the deviation of the. road at Wimbledon, a matter-which could be left to tbe Councillors for the riding to settle with the landowners interested. ..',. Patangata Riding.—A tender sent in last month for Limpuß's Cutting, in the Wantukairoad, was rejected in consequence■of its being excessive, and'fresh tenders,,were called, which will be laid before the Council to-day with ethers for metal repairs in the Homewood Bridge-Patangata road; .which . has been severly handled during the progress of tbe Oero bridge works. ,-Minor metal repairs have been effected _b the Te Aute road, at tbe northern boundary of the county, and surface labor-employed for one month to clear, out the drains and water tables, which have been neglected. I thinit will be advisable for the Council to take into consideration the purchase of certain, quarries in this riding, whose owners reoeiye a royalty on all metal removed.. The purr chase of an aore or two at the quarries in use, with a right-of-way thereto, would prove a large saving ta the Counoil in the long run. At the time this is being done the survey of the quarry at Homewood bridge might include a deviation of the road from the bridge, with a view to improving the grade and abandoning the bridge .altogether. Oero Riding.—The Road Board have let two large contraots for completing the formation of the road down to the foot of thePateft hill and along the Mangakuri station. The" east; approach *to the Oero bridge has been completed; and metalled, and the bridge itself will shortly be open for tl traffic. I beg to recommend that a -portion of tbe loan funds be applied to improving the grade at the foot of Dillon's Hill at the western apprbaph, for a lenftth of about six chains.' "' .' " ' rt _','j,' v ' ~'''' ''' : Tamumu Riding-—The Board has decideto [erect a seventy-bot\bridg_ aorosfitlie Poiirerere creek in the station paddocks, and so save a considerable detour in the road. One thousand yards of metal are being delivered on the road between the Red' Gate and Punawaitai. The contract for the deviation at the Puru Puru creek ia not yet completed, ; E. GILBEBTSON, " Js'. Road Inspector. On Eperaima Ridingi— On the motion of Crs. Crosse and Handyside, it was resolved that the .formation on Canning's lino and metalling cutting at MoMillah's deviation, and formation at Crosses Hill, be put in hand at once. ~

Ou Porangahau Riding.—On the motioja of Crs. Crosse and Handyside, it was re.solved that tho terms of tho Porangahau Koad : Board be accepted, subject to the Council removing the roadman's whare in Doctor's Gulfy; also tbat the other suggestions in the report be adopted, except the formation Sharp's Crossing.

0_ Patangata Riding.—Nothing done ; no money. On Oero Riding.—Mr Maokay's report on the new bridge was read, to the effeot that he forwarded the final schedules of work done, that the bridge, with wings, was completed on Saturday last, and the work done in a satisfactory manner by Mr Ca Isoin, the contractor, who tried to get it finished in time for the wool traffic, and had done bo three months within his contract - time. The clerk said the contract price was -4927, but it had actually cost £5022.—Th0 Chairman said the work was very satisfactory, and deserved some recognition.— On the motion of Crs. Saxby and Handyside, a vote recording the satisfactory manner in which the contract had been completed was passed. The pay-sheet for three months was passed. . The Finance Committee'sactioumregard to repairs to WalUngford bridge was confirmed. On the motion of the Chairman and Cr. White, the Valuation Roll was ordered to be amended as per list submitted. On the motion of Cra. Crosse and Saxby, tenders were ordered to be called for dog collars for the year. On the motion of the Chairman and Cr. Handyside, it was resolved that, the time for receiving tenders for five hundred yards of 'nutal at Wanstead, and formation of three and a-half chains at WaUingford be extended to January Bth. On the motion of Crs. Crosse and Handyside, it was decided to hold a special meeting on Bth January to deal with the exchange of Waikopiro VaUey road for the coast road, and the petition for a new road district. Or. CrOsse gave the requisite notices of motion for.the speoial meeting. Tenders were received as follows:—14 chains formation at Limpus'—W. McKenzie £43 (accepted) .—ISOO yards metal at Patangata—A. J. Duncan Uod (cheque informal) ; Ward and Collins Is b£d (cheque informal); W. McKenzie la 4|d (accepted). The Finance Committee (Messrs. Maskersey White, andHartree) were re-appointed for the year.
