Thk Eov. Father Iβ Menant Dcs Chesnais has been contributing a series of articles to the Cathclic Times on " In&ifferentism and Secret Societies." Under the heading of " Secret Societies and Morality," the rev. gentleman has had a good deal to cay about Freemasonry. His articles show that ho has read, mid dipped into, a good many American publications whioh purport to enlighten the world as to the objects of the Craft, but the result of his studies is shown in this amusing , paragraph :— "lt may bo observed that in England ami the colonies the spirit of Freemasons ie quite different. There they are loyal and harmless—they areexternally loyal— boonuceotherwlßcevery one would fly from them with a fooling of horror; but the end they have in view is the same, although they must use dissimulation until they hare prepared public opinion to accept their views aad unite with them to overthrow monarchy and aristocracy and establish a republican government instead. That they are gaining ground iv England is, alas ! too evident. The latest strikes are an outcome of the principles of the craffc. There is a hostile spirit growing day by day against sovereignty, landlordism, and capitalists. Freemasons encourage that rebellious spirit because it paves -tho way for them. Ido not mean to say England and English landlords and capitalists havo not a •*reat deal to account for. I even grant the dislike which is entertained against them is not altogether unmerited, but the fact remains the same. Socialists, Freemasons, and other secret societies are inciting the working classes to rebel, to vindicate their rights and overthrow authority; this is, , and always will be, their main object where' ever they may be."
