Sir Henry Parkes declines to recognise the federal Council as a fitting place to discuss General Edwards's report on tho defences of Australia. Hobart, This day. General Edwards's report says the local forces are unsatisfactory, and but little reliance could be placed on them as a means of defence. If an enemy landed a day's march would bring them to tho capital, and nothing would prevent its capturo. CHOLERA SCARE. Mklbotjknb, This day. There is considerable excitement in Fitzroy, one of the northern suburbs, over an alleged case of Asiatic cholera, the victim was an Indian who only arrived recently from Singapore, who died suddenly. One doctor says it is a caso of true cholera ; tho Government health. officer says it was ■dysentery, while the steamer's doctor says the man was suffering from debility. He was buried on a certificate gtven by the steamer's doctor. The house and the stsanier have been quarantined as a precaution.
