AUCKLAND IMMORALITY.
Auckland, This day. The Diocesan Synod commenced its sitting to-day. Bishop Cowie, in his opening speech, roferriag to the social ovil question, saying ''It is by an increase of .tho same spirit of brotherhood which is of the essence of true Christianity that other social evils must bo checked and suppressed. Of these there are somo that it is a shame even to I speak of as prevalent in a Christian community. I speak advisedly in declaring my earnest conviction that more barm than good is done by familiarising young men and women with the details of such vices through communications made to the public journals of our city ; indeed, tbe only justification of such action, it appears to me, is tho personal ministration ot' those who thus oft'eud in endeavoring to rescue those that have fallen, and their prepa redness to pro- > vide a remedy for tho abonttt ration they expose. Purity in this respect is like the grace of humility—more surely cherished by silent effort than by public di-_ußKion."
