Sir W. T. Robertson, M. P. for Brighton has committed suicide by cutting bis throai during a fit of mental depression consequent on illness.

The Calliope has been ordered to return. Some of the crew will be paid off. The French papers, referring to the establishment of tho commune of Franceville in tho New Hebrides, deny that the movement indicates any design on the part of France to annex tho islands.

Returns of 153 second ballots for the French elections have been received, showing 10S Republicans elected and 45 Oppositionists, including I' 2 Royalists. Paris returned 22 Republicans and 14 Boulangists. M.M. Naquet, Laissant, Laur, Mermcix, Guyot, Floquet, and Lockroy havo been elected. M. Rochefort was defeated. During a storm at Cazliari, a seaport of Sardinia, 240 houses were destroyed and several lives wore lost. Tho deck laborers at Flonsburg in Schloswig-Holstein havo struck. It is believed that they are acting in connection with tho London Unions. Sydney, October 7. A yacht containing twenty-three holidaymakers was capsized in the harbor to-day. A girl named Nellie Thompson was drowned, and two other girls named Fahey and Stewart are missing. It is believed that the rest were saved. Melbourne, October 7. Rain fell to-day, slightly interfering with training operations. Four more of Mr. White's team—Sequel, Prelude, Utter, and Victor Hugo—were exercising at Flemington to - day. Dreadnought is still tlio favorite for tho Derby, 2 to 1 being wanted ; 4 to 1 Singapore, 8 to 1 Dunkeld (off). Gift has been soratched for tho Caulfield Cup.
