ALLEGED CATTLE STEALING. August Wegner was charged with having on the 16th March last stolen two heifers the property of one Robert Cox. 'Mr Dick appeared for the accused, who pleaded tiot guilty. Mr A. Fischer acted as German interpreter. Mr F. Smith was chosen foreman of the JUTMr Cotterill stated the facts of the case for tho Crown. The circumstances were of a very simple character. In the month of March last Mr Cox, a small farmer, owned eight head of catth, four cows, two calves, and two heifers. These two heifers were missed at the time stated. Cox knew them well, as he had reared the heifers, himself. About that time one Antonio De Lomba, a coachman, saw the accused driving a number of cattle, and amongst them were two heifers answering the description of thoao missed by Cox from his place. After this, Cox, from information . received, proceeded with Constable Siddles to the slaughtering yards of a person named Olsen, and thero discovered, amongst the remains, ahead, which he was positively prepared to swear was the head of one of the two heifers which he had lost. Olsen would tell them that this was the head of a hoifer brought there by the prisoner at the time that the eaachraan saw him driving the cattle along the road. Evidence was then taken. Mr Dick briefly addressed the jury, and His Honor having summed up, the jury, after a short retirement, returned a verdict of not guilty, and the prisoner was discharged. The Court thon adjourned till ten o'clook to-morrow morning.
