Waipawa.

[OTO COHEESPONDKST.]

As you wore informed, Wateno Hapuka died on Saturday morning at his residence behind the hmpire Hotel, Waipawa. Ho will not a heathy man, and some few years ago he suffered much from dropsy. LatteJy he hud appeared all right, so far as the public wtiro aware, but about Tuesday last ho had to lay up. Still his state was not thought critical till Friday night, when Dr. Mirbach was sent for, and attended, but it was too late, and early next morning , Wateno passed away. As he was a chief of distinction, it is intended to give him a befitting- funeral. Mr. W. H. Sebley received instructions to furnish the coffin and conduct the fiual arrangements. The coffin proper encloses a zinc one, in which the body was soldered down, and it as well as the outer one contains a sheet of glass over the portion from the t> boulders upwards. Tho

outer coffin is covered with velvet, and has black and gold furniture. I believe the cause of death was hydro-pericardium, or dropsy of the heart. The natives were in a jrruat state of excitement all day, avoiding food, but making , up with drinking. At 5 a.m. on Sunday the remains were convoyed to Tβ Hauko with due solomnity, where they were placed in a tent. A great tangi will be held in about a week, to which .Europeans will bo invited, whou tho body will be formally interred in the same vault as his brother and hi« celebrated father, tho liapukti. His age is unknown, some of the natives saying 25 and others 40, I should thit.k tho latter nearer tho mark, lie measured 6ft 7iu. wht-u laid out. All his clothing and blankets were burnt on Saturday.

(Joiistablo Tronson has withdrawn his resignation for the present, but will bo trunafurrud to Napier, und Constablo Treanor, of your town, is to come to Waipawa. The latter enjoys a good reputation in the department, and is said to bo a very good oflioor.

The case O. Hanson v. C. P. Johnson, for damages by firing bu*h ut Blackburn, was continued by G. A. I'reece. Esq., R.M., on Friday, when several witnessos were examined ; those for tho defence oontradioting those for tho plain tilt' as to tho direction of tho wind. The decision wan reserved till next Cotir* day, which falls on AVudnei-day next. On tho sajuo day Hie cui-e of Poem v. Fletcher, seeking , wuroties of the peace, will bo heard. The following Road Board elections have

been decided with.ut a poll:— Waipukurau -Messrs Jr. Barrio, J. S. Bissott, A. Jones, J. Heholes, and W. C. Smith. Waipawu. Koad Board—Messrs Bennett, T. Cowper, J W. Mildon, AY. Ruthbone, and A. 0. Sorimgoour. Walliugford — Mcsfrs G. Hunter, 0. L. Mrtckersoy, D, Sifus, and J. White, Only four were nominated, and an extraordinary election will have to be hold for an additional member. At Porangahau, Messrs M. Franklin, S. Franklin, H. G

Handy.sido, W. Palmer, F. E. T. Simcox, und J. "White wore nominated, and a poll will bo taken noxt Saturday. At Ruatuuiwha, Mei-si's H. H. Bridge, A. Hnneen, 0. Hansen, J. L. Herriuk, C. P. Johnson, N. P Madeoa, D. McLeod, H. P. Petersen, J. B. Rhodes, ani A. H. Ross, woro nominated As this ia one too many, a poll will be hold on Saturday next. Aβ all these elections have to be hold in tho first week in May, it seems odd to see ono election called for 11th May ! In another case, where an extraordinary election has to be held, only ten days' notice ia given, although tho Act says that in such cases not less than twenty nor more than twentylire days' notices shall be given. Of course, it matters little or nothing really, but some day, when there is an opponition, tho winning Candidalo will be ousted on the ground of irregularity. I do not point out these errors in a captiom spirit, but to prevent a repetition. Nor have I picked out tho worft case that has come under my observation, simply becau.se 1 do not want iinyono to get into trouble.

Thero was a large attendance at the funeral of Mr. Nicholas Loyo at AshleyClinton yesterday—about 200, including thirty officers and past officers cf the Abbotsford Lodge of Oddfellows from

Waipawa. The Key. Mr. Knipe conducted tho Hervico, and was followed by the Oddfellows' address, given by Mr" Benjamin Johnson. ' •
