A largo gathering took place nt Essex's hotel, Makatoku, on Saturday evening last, to bid farewell to Mr. Joseph Roulston, railway porter, on the eve of his departure for Wellington, to which place ho has been iran.sl'erred. Mr. Lycett took tho chair, and explained that the object of tho meeting was to bid farewell to Mr. RoiiUton, wliuse departure from Makatokti all would regret, also that he had been requested to pre-si-nt the truest with a testinioiiial — a gold locket—in aiiprci'iatiou of his courtesy and services during his three years' sojourn i« Makatoku.
