An Appeal
[TO THK EDITOR. J
Sib —The winter upon which we have •entered will, I fear, bring very great ■suffering to the abject poor in tho east of London. For the adults among these wo can, alas, do very httlo: but I am deeply anxious to deliver as nv»ny misorable little children .ac possible from their wretched surroundings in tho slums and lodginghouso districts. In such placea boys and irirls abonnd whose lives are almost without Iny prospect of good. These poor " waifs and strays," reared from infancy amidst .awful scenes of vieo and immorality, if unaided, fall victims at an early age to vile examples and pernicious influences of their surroundinge. Wo are at work day and night seeking to rescue and to save such. Moreover, young cripples, children who are Heaf and dumb, and little ones otherwise pWevously afflicted, who have perhaps never known a day's health, and who have suffered untold hardship and want, appeal to me daily for aid. I cannot, I daro not, turn ou such away ! I have actually now throe thousand poor children under »v euro, and every day eight or nine fresh , ewes are admitted to the shelter of our homos. Will you give tho enclosed sober statement of cad and serious fact your careful consideration? Christian people, by the exercise of but a little aeif-demal, could hold up my hande very effectually whilst J and my colleagues continue tbes arduous task is which'we have been ceaselessly engaged for twenty-two years mi thei Ast •ond of the metropolis. May I not rely •upon you for some help jnst now when our -winter's burdens afo peculiarly heavy/ Auy gift which you way send in response •miv bo welcomed and promptly acknowledged, if add/essed to our treasurer, William Fowler, E«q., or (with tho form on the bade hereof, and in tha aeaompanying .envelope) ito your faithful fellow-worker amongst outcast and periehing children, TuojfV '-T- Babxabeo, London.
