London, September 11. Sir Saul Samuel, who arrived in London this week, has had, at the suggestion of Sir Henry Parkes, an interview with Lord Stanley, President of the Board of Trade, in reference to Mr Sandford Fleming's proposal that Canada and Australia should confer as to the possibility of reciprocity with regard to lhe Pacific cable and mail.*. Lord Stanley expressed himself favorable to the cable project, but added that the majority of those interested in the question were hostile to Sir Julius Vogel's proposal that the Eastern Extension Company and the Pacific Company should amalgamate and make the terminus, of the cable San FranciM.'O instead of Vancouver Island. September 13. The rumor that the Canadian Government intended to ask ttie Imperial Government for a .subsidy towards the Dominion railways is denied. It is reported that Mr W. 11. Smith, leader of the House of Commons, is to be raised to the peerage, and that be will be succeeded as leader by Mr G. J. Goschen, Chancellor of the Exchequer. It is stated that the rumor respecting a Chinese invasion of Australia is a hoax. The report that there is a chance of collusion between China and Russia is ridiculed. The first steps in the action Parncll v. The Times have been taken at Edinburgh. The ['r Union] Bank of Australia has declared a dividend of 12 per cent, and carried £lo,oo'i to tho reserve fund. Monsignor Pcrsieo, the Papal delegate, will not return to Ireland. News has been received here that Major Barttelot, who was in charge of one portion of Stanley's expedition, has been murdered by some Arab carriers. Mr Jamieson, who w_s with the party, will succeed him in command. C.vi.ti'tta, September 10. Eight thousand troops will be mobilised for the purpose of punishing the tribes who murdered Colonel Batty and Captain Urmstou.
