CHANNEL TUNNEL BILL REJECTED.
London, June 28,
In the House of Commons to-day, despite the strong advocacy given to the scheme by Mr Gladstone, the Channel Tunnel Bill was rejected by a majority of 112. EDUCATION IN ENGLAND. Tho Education Commission have made their report. They recommend that encouragement should be given to tho voluntary school scheme, and that religious and moral education should be developed. WHEAT AND WOOL. Two cargoes of Australian wheat have been sold at 32s 9d. At the wool sales to-day 24,000 bales were catalogued. Prices generally are unchanged, though crossbreds show a firmer tendency. DROUGHT. Calcutta, Juno 27. Tho crops in northern India aro seriously affected by long droughts.
