The Daily Telegraph. FRIDAY, MAY 25, 1888.
The Queen completed tho sixty-eighth year of her ago yesterday, and her birthday opened with brighter family prospeots than a month or two ago could have been expected. Tho happiness of a fainity oirelo depends upon the, well-being of each and all of its members, and English people ! in every part of tho world toko a personal interest in all that affects Her Majesty's peace of mind. Tho sympathy that exists between the people and the Queen, is the best evideneo of the loyalty of Englismen to tho Crown as represented by Victoria. Her Majesty's reign has afforded three remarkable instances of that sympathy—the nation mourned when she was widowed; when eho publicly returned thanks in St. Paul's Cathedral on the recovery of ■ tho Priuoo of Wales, the wliolo nation rojoiced with her; and when «he celebrated her jubilee' tho nation as one man congratulated hor. Those three events were no State functions at which tho people were ordered to show their loyalty, and did so as obedient subjects; but each one offered an occasion for a spontaneous manifestation of affection towards tho best sovoreign that ever sat ou tho throno of England. The Queen is an Englishwoman holding most dear those family ties that render English homos so beautiful. She is devotedly attached to ull her children, and the heavy misfortune that seemed but a short time back to be hanging over her eldest daughter promised but a sorrowful birthday. Better news has now come from Berlin; not only is the Emperor getting stronger, but our own Princess Royal, tho Empress, is onco more popular "with the German people, in spite of the Court intrigues, that first tried to keep her husband from micceedingto the Crown, and then blackened her own character. In .her case it may truly bo said that virtue' has triumphed. Thus, in tho knowledge of the happiness of her family, and tho aifection of ftor pooplo, the Queen entered Jupon tho siJcty-ninth year of her ago.
