S.V.F.B.

The Spit Volunteer Fire Brigade last night celebrated their anniversary by a social all-night dance in the Navals' Hull. Wednesday toeing the night on which the Port Ahuriri Quadrille Assembly hold their weekly gatherings, they combined with the Brigade in making tho latter's anniversary ball" and tho first of tho season—the leapyear ball excepted—as successful as possible. The result was satisfactory to nil concerned, as fully iSO took the floor. The weather was cold and bracing—all that could be drsired, and all present took advantage of it, and indulged in the light fantastic to their heart's content. The laflies' drosses need no remarks passed upon them, a3 it was not a " dress " ball, but,

nevertheless, some very pretty evening cos' tunie.s were to be seen, white and cream, witl pale blue and different shades of rod trim

mings, being tbe prevailing colors, while the

blacks, us usual, lent variety to the display. And what shall wo say of the floor ? It was simply superb ! Time after time we have given the Navals' Hall floor the palm for smoothness, and wo have now to reiterate all wo have said on former occasions. It seems to improve with use, and when we say that couple after couple hwt, night inspected closely the timber of which it was made— a Iα skating-rink, though, perhaps, the falls were not so heavy—it is sufficient evidence of its excellence. We venture to say there is not another floor in Hawke's Bay like it for its glass-like appoaranoe. A lady correspondent—" Edith " —ti short time ago asked the question as to what was to boconic of the votaries of the terpsichorean art this winter, as all the hulls in the town were engaged. Here is the chance to help a deserving corps and also to afford enjoyment to dancers. The Navals' Hall Ls spacious and airy, of the riirht shape, good dressing-rooms, and a splendid floor. No doubt arrangements could be made with Messrs Redstone and Cotton to run their ' busses at cheap rates on (lundfe nights, and the hall can be procured at a moderate figure. While we hsive such v hall us the Navals', dancing need never be allowed to languish. But to return to the ball of hist night. The catering was in tho hands of the Brigade members' wives and lady friends, and, judging by the way in which the tables were rushed at supper time, we opine the good tilings provided suffered considerably. The ladies' wants wi-re first attended to, tho gentlemen following. The viands were one and all pronounced excellent, while lemonade, tea, and coffee were to be obtained in plenty. The music was in the capable hands of Mr Sorrell's string band, and gave, as usual, entire satisfaction. Tho players were Mrs. Morrison (piano), Mr SorrcH (violin), Mr Carver (cornet), and Mr Maddig;m (bass viol). The following whs the programme : —Muvcli and polka, "Theodore" and "P. and O"; quadrille, "La Buulaiigme"' ; wiiltz, "Bitter Sweet"; schottisoho, ''Fashionable". T^) , Alberts, ■■Figaro"; mazurka.

Miss Murray also contributed a long " extra." Messrs "W. Lucas and R. Flaunigan v:ero efficient M.C.s., and a very enjoyable gathering broke up at 3.30 a.m. this morning. Mr W. Wilkio deserves credit for the manner in which he worked up the ball; ho is getting quite- an adept at. the business.
